We all know that running a car is a costly business. There is no getting away from that fact and with petrol prices constantly on the rise there are some things that you can do that will help you to save money instantly on your fuel bills.
Service your car
Make sure that your car is serviced regularly and that it is running correctly. This will ensure that your car is operating to the best of its ability at all times and saving you money on fuel as well as costly repairs. It is vital to maintain the correct level of oil in your engine for it to operate efficiently. Check your vehicles hand book to familirise yourself with its specific requirements. Check your oil levels on a weekly basis. If the air pressure in your tyres is too low, you will be using more fuel than you need to. You are also running the risk of causing damage to your tyres meaning that you will need to replace them sooner. Under inflating your tyres creates more rolling resistance which causes the excess fuel usage.
Less weight, less cost
Remove any unnecessary weight from your car. If you carry around things that you do not need for a particular journey, get them out. If you have a roof rack or box on your vehicle and you don’t require it for your trip, take it off before you travel
Wait until you are ready to start driving to turn on your engine. Leaving your engine idling causes higher fuel consumption. There are many other small tips to save you money when motoring below. Try some or all of them, and you’ll soon see the difference
- Don’t waste your fuel, or your time for that matter, driving around trying to find your destination. Plan ahead and make sure that you know your route. Always be sure to check regular traffic updates for your journey too and have an alternate route planned in case of any traffic problems.
- If your journey is only a short one, consider walking or taking the bike instead. It’s not only better for your pocket, it’s better for your health and well being too!
- Drive better! Keep an eye on the road ahead to avoid breaking unnecessarily. Make sure that your gear changes and acceleration are smooth and neat.
- Stopping and starting burns more fuel so where possible keep the car rolling slowly instead of coming to a stop.
- Don’t use the Air-Conditioning! This is a huge burner of fuel. Instead open the windows and feel the breeze, it’s free!
